AG Perarivalan was arrested on 11 June 1991 and convicted of purchasing a 9 volt battery for the explosive device. V Sriharan alias Murugan, his wife Nalini, AG Perarivalan, Santhan, Jayakumar, P Ravichandran and Robert Payas were the seven persons convicted for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
According to reports, Perarivalan had taken Sivarasan to a motor shop a few days before the murder and had bought a motorcycle in his name, but had given the wrong address.

A G Perarivalan was born on 30 July 1971 in Jolarpet, Tamil Nadu to Gnanasekaran alias Kuyildasan and Arputham Ammal. His parents were followers of Periyar who is the founder of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. At the time of his arrest he completed his diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering. A G Perarivalan made use of his time while in prison, completing his bachelor’s in computer applications and master’s degree in computer applications through the Indira Gandhi National Open University while in prison.
In 2012, A G Perarivalan scored the highest ever score among prisoners in the plus two exam with 91.33 percent. In 2013, she topped a diploma course examination conducted by Tamil Nadu Open University and bagged a gold medal.
A. G. Perarivalan Arrest
A. G. Perarivalan was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation officials on 11 June 1991 at Periyar Thidal, Chennai. He was accused of providing a 9-volt battery for the explosive device to Sivarasan, the conspirator of the murder.
His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the Supreme Court’s decision on 18 February 2014. Subsequently, on 19 February 2014, the Tamil Nadu government announced its decision to release him along with six other convicts.
