An influential legal group funded by conservative supporters filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump, marking the beginning of a judicial battle on the new commercial tariff package announced by his administration this week.
New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA) said on Thursday (3) that Trump illegally imposed emergency rates on Chinese products. The group represents simplified, a small stationery and organization company, which claims that it will suffer “severe damage” with “unconstitutional” tariffs.
The lawsuit was filed with a Florida Federal Court and can become the first legal challenge to new widespread tariffs. Announced on Wednesday (2), the measures caused strong reactions in international markets and made US bags plummeted.
“Summoning emergency powers to impose widespread tariffs on imports from China, without legal backing, is an abuse of power. Trump usurped the authority of Congress and violated the principle of separation of powers provided for in the Constitution,” said Andrew Morris, NCLA’s senior lawyer, in a statement.
NCLA involvement gives political and legal weight to the case. The organization, which presents itself as a group of non -profit and non -profit civil rights, has a history of high -profile victories and is funded by influential conservative sectors, according to Bloomberg Law.
Simplified, also known as Emily Ley Paper In., is directed by women and sells products such as premium agendas and personal organization tools. In the lawsuit, the company accuses Trump of improperly circumventing Congress by resorting to the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Law (IEEPA) to institute tariffs.

The case requests the court to declare unconstitutional tariffs and to recognize the violation of US administrative rules. In addition to Trump, the action also cites as defendants the Department of Internal Security (DHS) and its main leaders. So far, neither the White House nor the DHS have spoken on the case.
The process was registered as Emily Ley Paper Inc. v. Trump, number 25-CV-00464, at the Northern Florida District Court (thought).
