Glauber Braga starts hunger strike after approval of the cassation by the Ethics Council

The Ethics Council of the House approved, by 13 votes to five, the cancellation of Federal Deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ), on Wednesday, 9. The parliamentarian announced that he will start a hunger strike and that he will not leave the National Congress until the end of the process that asks for his cassation of the Chamber of Deputies. Glauber states that former mayor Arthur Lira (PP-AL) acts behind the scenes to ensure the background of the psoilist.

“I made the unconscious, irrefutable decision that I will not be defeated by Arthur Lira, I will not be defeated by the secret budget, I will not be defeated by the minority partner of this story that was MBL,” said Glauber. “I will stay here in this room, in the National Congress until the process is completed. Today I started. From now on, I will not feed.”

The pronouncement came after a session full of controversy and insult exchanges among parliamentarians, in a session of almost six hours. The deputy’s speech was even interpreted as a threat of renouncing his mandate by his allies. But Glauber said he will not give up his mandate.

It is still appealed to the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ). If the case advances after the vote in this collegiate, it will be up to the plenary to decide.

Deputy Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP), 90, argued that other party members stay in the house with Glauber without leaving Congress.

Glauber’s co-religionists accuse the existence of a backstage movement to get the vote to occur later this Wednesday, 9. The strategy, points out this group, would postponed as much as possible the beginning of the order of the day, when the vote begins in the plenary of the house. At the beginning of a plenary session, the commissions need to be closed.

The leaders of PSOL, Talíria Petrone (RJ), and PT, Lindbergh Farias (RJ), say that, unlike the usual, the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), did not answer messages, nor answered phone calls. An agreement made at the beginning of the year established that the sessions would start at 4 pm during the new management.

Since the beginning of the Motta era, the order of the day began later on March 18, at 5:12 pm. The vote on the cassation began at 6:20 pm.

Around 5 pm, Deputy Fábio Costa (PP-AL), the same party and state of Lira, point to psoalists, filed an application to start the vote. Sought, Costa, says he acted on his own will.

The process, opened in 2024, was due to the episode in which Glauber expelled a member of the Free Brazil Movement (MBL) from the house to kicks.

On April 16, 2024, Glauber expelled from the House the influencer Gabriel Costenaro, a member of MBL, to the kicks. At the time, Costenaro hinted at the former mayor of Nova Friburgo Saudade Braga, who was sick at the time. She passed away 22 days after the incident.

Glauber said in different sessions of the Ethics Council that the report was “bought” by former mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), who was holding office last year. Glauber also called Lira on different “bandit” opportunities.

Magalhães and Glauber have collected between the process since the beginning of the process. In August 2024, the DEM deputy defended himself from criticism. “Your defense is incriminated. I do not collide with anyone. My relationship with President Arthur is discreet,” said Magalhães. “Very discreet,” said Glauber.

Soon after, Magalhães returned the attacks, called Glauber “inconsequential and responsible” and said he deserves to be revoked. “I don’t want to revoke you. But that you deserve, you deserve,” said the rapporteur.

Arriving at Wednesday’s session, Glauber took the opportunity to make attacks he made over last year. He arrived at the commission room early in the morning accompanied by dozens of militants, shouting the motto “Glauber, stay.” In a speech to supporters, he again called Lira a “bandit” and the MBL militant “minibandy.”

He recalled that Magalhães in 2001 assaulted with a kick a journalist who denounced the parliamentarian’s uncle-former Senate president and former Bahia governor Antonio Carlos Magalhães-and left Impune. In the speech, Glauber asked his supporters to welcome Maneca Muniz.

This is the second time that the Ethics Council approves the revocation of a deputy in this legislature. The first happened with Chiquinho Brazão (without party-RJ) last year.

Brazão was arrested preventively on the accusation made by the Federal Police of being the mastermind of the murder of former Rio Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes. Only one deputy, Gutemberg Reis (MDB-RJ), voted against cassation and only one abstained: Paulo Magalhães, the rapporteur of the Glauber case.

The parliamentarian arrested for over a year continues with the parliamentary mandate, as the process was not voted in the plenary, responsible for the final decision. As Estadão showed, since he was arrested in March 2024, he has cost more than $ 1.8 million to the House.
