The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann (PT), classified as “absurd” and “deep contradiction” the support of deputies of government base parties to the bill that proposes amnesty to those convicted of the scammer acts of 8 January 2023.
In a statement on Tuesday (15) to CNN BrazilGleisi stated that, in addition to representing a political break with the executive, support for the project directly violates the judiciary and democratic institutions.
“It is absurd to support the urgency for a project from the government base. It is a serious affront to the judiciary and democracy itself. Urgency must be intended for projects that benefit the Brazilian people, not to provide a continued blow,” said the minister.
She also associated the bill with the attempt to protect former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and allies involved in the attempt to subversion of the institutional order. According to Gleisi, the proposal aims to “guarantee the impunity of Bolsonaro and all who tried to overthrow this government, including killing President Lula.”
The statement occurs one day after the PL leader in the House, Sostenes Cavalcante (RJ), submit an urgent request for the project. Of the 262 signatures gathered to file the application, more than half are deputies of Centrão parties who make up the Allied base and occupy ministries in the Lula government.
Criticism and setbacks
Last week Gleisi herself was criticized in stating that “amnesty or mediation of penalty was defensible from the point of view of some parliamentarians”, which generated a negative reaction among STF magistrates.

After the repercussion, the minister retreated and said she expressed himself badly: “What I meant is that it is up to Congress to mediate with the judiciary in the issues involving January 8. But revising penalties is a function of the judiciary. There is no amnesty, as Bolsonaro wishes,” said the minister.
Congress protagonism
Earlier, the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), made a publication on social networks emphasizing that in a democracy, “no one has the right to decide anything alone” and that guidelines should be discussed with party leaders.
Although not explicitly mentioned the Amnesty PL, the mayor is the one who has the power to guide or not the urgent requests, and currently there are over a thousand projects awaiting deliberation.
