SP has alert for heavy rains and winds up to 100 km/h

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued orange alert to heavy rainfall in cities in the state of São Paulo. The warning is valid until Friday, 4, and may be extended. The expectation is rain of up to 100 mm/day and intense winds of up to 100 km/h. In orange alert, there is a risk for cutting electricity, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges.

Also according to Inmet there is orange alert for a stretch of Amazonas and the state of Acre, as well as yellow alert for the incidence of rain on Thursday (3) in areas of the North, Midwest, Southeast, South and part of the northeast of the country. The warnings can also be updated.

SP Civil Defense will set up a crisis office

On Wednesday, 2, the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo had already issued a warning for the incidence of heavy rains between this Thursday and Saturday, 5, and the population should be aware of the risks and safety recommendations.

According to the state agency, the formation and performance of a cold front will favor the occurrence of thunderstorms in the eastern state of the state of São Paulo, mainly reaching the regions of the North Coast, Baixada Santista, Paraíba Valley, São Paulo Metropolitan Region, Vale do Ribeira and for the Sorocaba, Campinas and Itapeva regions.

“Meteorological models point to heavy rain with very high volume on these days, which can generate flooding, landslides and other inconvenience, especially in risk areas,” he warns.

The Civil Defense of the State of SP will set up the crisis office from 14h this Thursday. The office should be mobilized at the State Civil Defense CGE, by Sunday, the 6th, to ensure prompt response to possible damage caused by thunderstorms.

See some recommendations:

  • Avoid moving through flooded areas or near streams and rivers during heavy rain;
  • Do not shelter under trees or metal structures during thunderstorms with lightning;
  • In case of strong winds, maintain distance from windows and objects that may detach themselves.
  • Residents of risky areas should be aware of signs such as cracks in the soil, inclination of trees and poles, and seek safe shelter if they realize indications of sliding;
  • Follow the Civil Defense alerts and recommendations through official channels to minimize impacts and ensure the safety of all.
