United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will travel to Buenos Aires on Monday, 14, where he will meet with government and private sector leaders to affirm the country’s full support for Argentina’s daring economic reforms, according to the US Department’s statement.
Bessent will meet with the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, and the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo.
“During his meetings in Argentina, Secretary Bessent will reiterate the United States’s firm support to the continuous implementation of President Milei’s robust economic agenda and will encourage the international community to fully support economic reform efforts,” the document points out.
“Thanks to President Javier Milei’s bold leadership, the relationship between the United States and Argentina is stronger than ever,” said the secretary, according to the text. “I eagerly await our positive discussions about the Argentine economy and the exploration of ways in which our nations can further deepen our vital economic relationship.”
The trip occurs after unions made a general strike on Thursday, 10, against Milei’s austerity policy.
This week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced a technical level agreement with Argentina for a 48 -month extended credit line of $ 20 billion. Today, the Argentine Central Bank reported that it has renewed a currency swap line with China, which allows access to a value equivalent to $ 5 billion in Yuans.
