Prem Sagar, son and producer of filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, died on Sunday. He breathed his last at 10 am today.
The last rites of Prem Sagar will be performed at 3 pm today at the Pawanhans crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai.
Prem worked for a long time under the Sagar Arts banner. This production house was started by his father Ramanand Sagar. Ramanand Sagar is known for making the TV series Ramayana. Prem Sagar worked as a stil photographer and cinematographer in several projects of this banner.
Let us know that the first broadcast of ‘Ramayana’ was on Doordarshan in 1987. In the show, Arun Govil played Ram, Deepika Chikhalia, Sita and Arvind Trivedi have played Ravana.
Prem Sagar shared some interesting things related to the shooting of ‘Ramayana’ in a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar.
Prem Sagar had told that if we do not go to Umargaon, then Ramayana could not be made. The best thing was that the place was cut-off from the whole world. The nature there made this serial and its characters alive. There were all kinds of locations around the set. Art director Hirabai Patel was a very talented person. He did all the films of Wadia Brothers. He offered us Vrindavan Studio in Umargaon. The place was no less than a ruin.
Prem Sagar further told that when we opened the door of that studio, there were many nets, buts, but the property (walls, chariots, etc.) there were very grand. We made a whole studio day and night. After that Umargaon became World Destination. The BBC channel came there. Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia stayed there. Nobody once used to recognize Umargaon, but after ‘Ramayana’ the city got a different identity.
Prem Sagar had told that the actors preferred to live in Umargaon. He had said, ‘Dara Singh used to take about 4 hours to make makeup for the role of Hanuman. They would get up at 3 o’clock in the night for the shift of 7 am. They could not eat anything after makeup. At that time there was no prosthetic makeup. We used Volcanized rubber. Doing makeup on that rubber. This is why we were able to do this because we used to get an actor and makeup team available for 24 hours. We used to work day and night.
