Father had slapped Jhannated
During the IFP festival, Vidhu Vinod Chopra had told that his father did not want him to enter the film industry. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s father D.N. Chopra wanted him to become a doctor.
Vidhu Chopra had said- When I told my father that I want to make films, he slapped me and said that the hungry will die. How will live in Mumbai? He had no money to send me to the film school.
I worked hard. I topped Kashmir University in Economics Honors so that I got National Scholarship from the Government of India.
FTII came with a scholarship of 250 rupees
Vidhu Vinod Chopra received Rs 250 at National Scholarship. Vidhu went to the Film Institute (FTII) in Pune with those rupees. During the diploma there, Vidhu made the short film ‘Murder at Manki Hill’ which received the National Award.
One of his documents was nominated for the Oscar ‘An encounter with faces’. Vidhu Vinod Chopra says- When my first film was nominated for the Oscar, I called my father and told that my film is going to the Oscar. He said it is a very good thing, but how much money are being received.
Had decided to commit suicide
During the conversation with NDTV, Vidhu Vinod Chopra had said that the first feature film ‘Dannth A. Death’ did not perform very well. Due to this, he was disappointed. He even decided to commit suicide, but he took his steps back to the family.
Let us know that ‘punishment -e -death’ was released in 1981. In which Naseeruddin Shah acted. The film was a remake of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s own short film ‘Murder at Monkey Hill’. This 20 -minute short film was made by Vidhu in 1976 during a diploma in FTII. Vidhu himself acted in this film. The film did not perform well at the box office.
Was sad after receiving the National Award
‘Murder at Manki Hill’ received the National Award for Best Experimental Short Film. However, Vidhu became unhappy after receiving the National Award at the hands of the President. Not only this, LK was also angry at Advani. This was discussed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra during a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar.
Vidhu had said- I had to get four thousand rupees with the National Award. I reached Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi to take the award. Neelam Sanjeev Reddy was the President of the country at that time. I had to receive the award at their hands. On reaching the stage, I received the award at the hands of His Majesty, along with an envelope.
Although there was no money in that envelope, there was just a postal letter, in which it was written that these money will be found after seven years. I was quite surprised.
LK Advani’s mercury became high
LK Advani was the Minister of Information and Broadcasting at that time. I told him my problem. His mercury became high after listening to me. He called me the next day Shastri Bhavan. I reached there at 11 am the next day. Advani ji was full of anger. He said that you do not know how to behave before the President. I too got angry. I told Advani ji- Sir, have you done breakfast? He nodded yes. I said- you must have had breakfast, but I did not.
Four thousand rupees first earnings of life
I need these money so much that I have come here on an empty stomach. Then Advani ji calmed down, he asked- what will you eat. I said that I will eat parathas and eggs. They ordered food for me. I sat on his table with Advani and ate parathas and omelets. After this, I also got that four thousand rupees. This was the first earning of my life.
There were no passports, visas and money to go to Oscar
After the short film “Murder at Monkey Hill”, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s documentary ‘Enacter with Faase’ was nominated for the Oscar. Vidhu had told- I came to know through the newspaper that my film has been nominated for the Oscars. I had nothing passports, visas and money, etc.
Awards were to be held two-three days later. I then reached LK Advani ji. I told him my agony. He got me passport for 6 months without police verification, as well as 20 dollars a day to live and eat. Apart from this, an Air India ticket was also provided.
After this, I went to the US embassy and added my hands and feet for the visa. He issued me a three -month visa. After this I left for America the next day. During the Oscar Awards, I met Godfather Director Francis Ford Copola. I did not dare to speak in front of him. After some time I spoke to him, he was very impressed by me. He also offered me to work with him.
Made governance to save 2000 rupees
However, after ‘punishment -e -death’, Vidhu worked as a production controller in director Kundan Shah’s film Jaane Do Bhi Yarro. One day during the climax scene, a scene in Mahabharata was also being shot. At that time, the actor, who was playing the sorrow for 500 rupees, suddenly asked for two thousand rupees and he was not ready to accept. At that time, Vidhu was short of money. Vidhu himself reached the set in the getup of Dushasan.
In 1986, Vidhu made ‘silent’ about Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. Then after directing the best films like ‘Parinda’ and ‘1942 A Love Story’ ‘Mission Kashmir’, Vidhu Chopra made many blockbuster films like Munnabhai MBBS, 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju. He returned to the direction after 13 years with Shikara in 2020 and then made the film 12th fail.
Amitabh Bachchan gifted a car, then mother slapped
Vidhu Vinod Chopra also made the film ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’ with Amitabh Bachchan. When Vidhu presented Amitabh Rolls Royce car worth Rs 4.5 crore, his mother slapped. When Vidhu Chopra gifted Amitabh a luxury car, he himself used to walk from Maruti.
During a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Vidhu Chopra had told- Amitabh Bachchan had seen my first film, he wanted to work with me from that time. Since he was a very big star, I also wanted to work with him.
However, this was possible when I made the film ‘Eklavya’. Amitabh Bachchan worked without money in that film. When he came on the set, he had a small briefcase. I asked how one to one and a half months is a shoot, how to work in such low clothes.
Amit ji said that Jaya has given so many clothes. They feel that I will not be able to work with you long. Jaya ji’s talk was going to prove to be somewhat correct. I and Amit ji got into a fight. I felt that now Amit ji would leave without filming.
However, the next day he reached the set at the right time. He completed the film with full vigor. I wanted to do something for them, so gifted such an expensive car. When my mother came to know about this, she slapped me many slaves. The mother said that it is giving such expensive vehicles to others and is running in a car -like car itself. At that time I used to walk with Maruti van.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra has a third marriage to Critics Anupama Chopra.
Vidhu has married three-three
As much as Vidhu Vinod Chopra has been in the discussion for his best films, he has also made headlines from his personal life. They have married not three times but three times. The first marriage was done to film editor Renu Saluja in 1976, but both of them got divorced in 1983.
After separating from Renu Saluja, Shabnam Sukhdev’s entry into Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s life. Both were tied in marriage in the year 1985, but the relationship did not last long and the two separated in 1989. Vidhu then married Anupama Chopra in 1990.
