Father did not want to become an actor
Naseeruddin Shah’s film journey was not so easy. The biggest wall in this was his father. He did not want Naseeruddin to go to films. After graduating from Aligarh Muslim University, Naseer took admission in the National School of Drama. Because of this, his father broke his relationship with him. Naseeruddin has two more elder brothers, one of whom became an army officer and the other brother engineer. The father wanted Naseeruddin to be something like his brothers, but his heart was situated elsewhere.
Dada and uncle moved to Pakistan after partition
Ali Mohammad Shah, father of Naseeruddin Shah, was a Tehsildar. When there was a partition between India and Pakistan, he moved to Dada and uncle to Pakistan. The only Naseeruddin was the father of Shah, who decided to live in India. He wanted to make his children an officer by teaching, but Naseeruddin Shah did not feel like this work. It is said that Naseer used to have only three things and that was cricket, theater and films.
Father refused to help
In a conversation with Lallan Top, Naseeruddin Shah had told that after the National School of Drama, he thought of going to Pune Film Institute (FTII). Father said that now how much acting has to be learned. When I insisted, I said that I cannot help you for two years, but I got selected and my brothers helped me a lot for two years. When I took admission in the institute, I needed 600 rupees as an entry fee. I wrote a letter to my father that I need 600 rupees immediately. I felt that he would refuse, but the next day he transferred 600 rupees through TMO without any question.

Father and son could not understand each other
Naseeruddin Shah further told- I never understood my father nor did he ever understand me. He believed in old traditions. There was always a gap among us, which never filled, I regret it very much. We (my father and me) could never see each other with eyes. When I was very young, he loved me very much, I have been told that. Then they lost love for me, because I was not good in school.
He himself studied up to high school, so he wanted to teach his children well. He was desperate that his children should be good in studies. He tried to give us the best education, as much as he could. When I got married, he was very shocked, but when I had a daughter, he went to meet his granddaughter and was very happy. To some extent my daughter’s birth helped to fix things between us, but it did not last long.
Could not attend the funeral of father
Naseer could not attend his father’s funeral, but when he went to his grave, he could not stop himself. Naseer had said- I went to his grave and told my heart. I told them everything that could not say his life. Sitting there and talking for hours, I felt as if he was listening.
There was no shape like a hero, girlfriend did a breakup
Even after learning the nuances of acting from the National School of Drama and Pune Film Institute (FTII), the path of acting was not easy for Nasir. Travels without money and tickets, sometimes they had to stay hungry. Her first girlfriends broke up due to lack of a hero-like appearance.
7.50 rupees to work in the first film
Naseer’s position was such that anyone was ready to play in the film. In 1967, he got the first film ‘Aman’. Rajendra Kumar had the lead role in this film and Naseer was seen in Extra artist (ie part of the crowd). Naseer received Rs 7.50 for this film.
This was mentioned by Naseer in an interview with Rediff. The actor had said- at that time I was 16 years old. The film was directed by Mohan Kumar. In the last scene in an extra role where Rajendra Kumar was being taken for his funeral, I was standing just behind him. This character was very serious. For this I got 7.50 rupees and I had run it for two weeks.
Dilip Kumar advised to go back home
After coming to Mumbai, Naseeruddin Shah was not in the touch of his parents. In such a situation, his family used to take his condition from Dilip Kumar. Naseer’s family has an old relationship with Dilip Kumar. Naseeruddin Shah’s aunt Shakina Apa had a good acquaintance with Dilip Kumar. Naseeruddin also used to visit Dilip Kumar’s house often.
The children of good households did not become actors
During the conversation with the Times, Naseeruddin recalled his old days and said- when I expressed my desire to make a career in acting from Dilip Saheb, he refused. Dilip Saheb said that I think you should go back home and study. People of good house do not try to become an actor. Hearing this, he became very nervous.
The question came to my mind that I should ask why you came in acting, but did not dare. Later I worked with Dilip Saheb in the film ‘Karma’, but at that time I did not remind him. Because thousands of people will come to Dilip Saheb’s house. They would not have even remembered that thing.
Did not look back after Shyam Benegal’s film
As the lead actor, Naseeruddin Shah started his career with director Shyam Benegal’s film ‘Nishant’ (1975). The film worked with Naseer with big actresses like Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi. Although the film lagged behind in terms of box office earnings, the audience appreciated Naseeruddin Shah’s performance. After this film, he worked in art films like ‘Aakrosh’, ‘Sparsh’, ‘Albert Pinto Ko Ange Hai Hai’, ‘Mandi’, ‘Mohan Joshi Hajir Ho’, ‘Ardh Truth’ and ‘Mirch Masala’.
After art films, in 1980, he acted in the mainstream film ‘Hum Paanch’, but became in Bollywood with the film ‘Karma’. Apart from this, he made a distinct identity with films like ‘Mohra’, ‘Najaiz’, ‘Chahat’, ‘China Gate’, ‘Sarfarosh’, ‘Iqbal’, ‘A Wednessde’ and ‘Dirty Picture’.

Filmfare Awards are used as door handles
The veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, who has won the acting, is also very much discussed about his controversial statements. It is often seen that the actor keeps everything with impunity. Whether it is something about living in the country or a matter of democracy, actors are always seen making statements which create panic on social media. Naseer had said that he used the Filmfare Awards as a door handle.
According to Naseer, any actor who took out his entire life in playing a role and worked hard, he is a good actor. If you choose any one of the actor and say that it is the best actor of the year, then how is it appropriate? I am not proud of those awards. I did not even go to take my last two awards. When I made a farmhouse, I decided to keep these awards there. Whoever goes to the washroom will get two awards as the handle is made by Filmfare Awards.

Diljit Dosanjh supported
In Diljit’s film ‘Sardar Ji 3’, when there was a dispute over working with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, Naseeruddin Shah favored Diljit. While sharing a post, he wrote- I am with Diljit. He has been a victim of dirty politics. Some people are looking for a chance to attack them. Casting was decided by the director, not Diljit. He is a famous person and worked in a film without any prejudice. Some people want to end personal relations between India and Pakistan.
Love for friends in Pakistan
Naseeruddin Shah further wrote in this post- I have close relatives and friends in Pakistan. No one can stop me from love or meeting them and an answer for those who will now say ‘go to Pakistan’, I would like to tell them ‘go to Kailasa’.
