Raina appeared in the Supreme Court on Tuesday in the case of mocking the disabled. The Supreme Court summoned five social media influencers, including India’s Got Latent Host Time Raina. All of them are alleged to have mocked the disabled persons including people suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) during a comedy show.
A bench of Justices Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked all the influencers to file a reply on the petition within two weeks. Also, warned that they would not be given much time.
The Supreme Court also clarified that the presence of all the influencers in the next hearing is necessary and will be taken seriously to not follow it. At the same time, Influencer Sonali Thakkar has been allowed to attend virtual hearing due to physical condition.
The bench gave Attorney General R.K. Venkatarmani ordered to work on a guideline for social media, which maintains the freedom of speech and balance between the rights and respect of others. The court emphasized that freedom of expression is fundamental, but it cannot come at the cost of violation of others’ rights. The court also drew attention to the challenge of implementing such guidelines.
What is the whole matter?
At the India’s Got Latant show, Raina is accused of harassing the child in his show at the time of pornographic content accused of pornographic content. He has been accused by the Cure SMA Foundation of India.
The Foundation told the court that the time Raina had said in the standup at that comedy club- ‘Look, the charity is a good thing, it should be done. Hearing the petition of the Foundation, the Supreme Court had described such content as harassing. Justice Suryakant had said- We are truly upset with these allegations, we keep such cases in record.
