Satyajit Ray’s house in Bangladesh was built about 100 years ago. After partition in 1947, this property became under the Bangladesh government.
India on Tuesday appealed to Bangladesh to stop the decision to demolish the famous filmmaker and litterateur Satyajit Ray’s demolition of the ancestral property. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) told the Bangladesh government that they should reconsider their decision.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement, ‘We are very sad that the ancestral house of Satyajit Ray located in Maman Singh, Bangladesh is being demolished. This house was of Satyajit Ray’s grandfather and eminent litterateur Upendrakishore Ru Chaudhary. This property is currently in a shabby state, owned by the Government of Bangladesh.
The ministry said, ‘This building is a symbol of the Bengali cultural renaissance. Given the history of the building, it would be better to consider repair and reconstruction options as a symbol of the Sahitya Museum and the shared culture of India-Bangladesh. The Government of India is ready to help for this.
Satyajit Ray was a famous Indian film director, writer, musician and painter. He is considered one of the big filmmakers of world cinema. Satyajit Ray’s house in Bangladesh was built about a hundred years ago. After partition in 1947, this property became under the Bangladesh government.
On July 15, the Ministry of External Affairs offered the Bangladesh government help to repair Satyajit Ray’s house.
Mamta Banerjee said- this building is associated with the history of Bengal This response of the Government of India about Satyajit Ray’s ancestral house came after reports that Bangladeshi officials are going to demolish this building. Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had criticized Bangladeshi officials for the move to demolish the house.
Mamta said that this building is deeply associated with the cultural history of Bengal. He said in a social media post, “I appeal to the Bangladesh government and all the conscious people of that country to take steps to conserve this heritage.” The Chief Minister of West Bengal had also appealed to the Government of India to intervene in the matter.
Mamta Banerjee appealed in the post on X to save Satyajit Ray’s ancestral house.
Preparation to build a semi concrete building by breaking the house of Satyajit Ray In Bangladeshi, child affairs officer, Mohammad Mehdi Zaman told the local media that Satyajit Ray’s house was being used as Maman Singh Children’s Academy. However, it became a threat to children due to its shabby condition.
According to the Bangladeshi official, the house was deserted for the last several years. Therefore, after the necessary approval, the work is being done to demolish the building. There is a preparation to build a new semi concrete building to start educational activities here.
The only Indian to receive lifetime achievements from Satyajit Oscar
A total of 37 films were directed by Satyajit Ray.
Satyajit Ray was born on 2 May 1921 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was from a reputed Bengali family and his grandfather Upendrakishore Ru Chaudhary was a famous writer and painter. Satyajit Ray’s first film was Pather Panchali, which was highly appreciated internationally.
It was the first part of the three -film series ‘Apu Trilogy’ released in Bengali language. Pather Panchali, released in 1955, Aparajito released in 1956 and the Apur Sansar, released in 1959, are called ‘Apu Trile’.
Satyajit Ray directed a total of 37 films. These include feature films, documents, and short films. His contribution to Indian cinema can be gauged from the fact that the Oscar Committee had given the Oscar Award for Lifetime Achievement to his house in Kolkata. Satyajit is the first Indian filmmaker to get a lifetime achievement Oscar.
Satyajit himself gave music of many of his films. He also used to write dialogues himself. The Government of India gave him the highest civilian honors of the country like Padma Bhushan in 1965, Padma Vibhushan in 1976, and posthumously in 1992 Bharat Ratna. He died on 23 April 1992 in Kolkata.
