Shutrughna Sinha’s son Kush Sinha is making her directorial debut with the supernatural thriller mystery film ‘Nikita Roy’. Apart from veteran actor Paresh Rawal, Kush’s film will feature Arjun Rampal, sister Sonakshi Sinha and a new star Suhail Nair. The film is releasing in theater on 18 July. The trailer of the film is getting very good response. In a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Kush has spoken on his journey and challenges.
After seeing the trailer of ‘Nikita Roy’, it is not seen that this is your directorial film.
I am still calm. Now much more have to be done. Yes, I feel happy that we have tried to bring something good and new in front of people. When all the stars of the film had said yes, it was felt that a responsibility had come on me. When so many legendary stars are saying yes to my first film, I also have the responsibility of bringing something good to the people. People would think that Sonakshi is a matter of home but it was not so. He did not speak many times before. Paresh Rawal Sir, Arjun Rampal had said yes before that. After the trailer, I am happy with the way people have given feedback but know that the film has to do a lot till the release.
Supernatural thriller films are less in India. Where did this concept come from in your mind?
This story was written by Pawan Kripalani ji. When I came to this story, a senior person of the industry told me to let you live. We want to make this with someone else. Whoever he wanted to make it, it did not become there. Then came to me around. I believe that it was my luck that I had to make ‘Nikita Roy’. After this I talked to Sonakshi. He was already aware of the script. I told him to read once again, whatever questions you will have, I will talk on it. Then I and my writer Neil Mohanty, Ankur did a lot of work on the script script. All three of us have changed the story a lot. There were many things that could hurt people. I am starting my career in Art’s field and I did not want to hurt anyone.
I have to give people something interesting so that they would see and they enjoyed it. When Sonakshi said yes, we felt that we were going on the right path. But when Paresh ji said yes after two meetings, then it felt that this story had power. Paresh ji is a very good person and helped him a lot during the shooting. At the same time, the talk with Arjun Rampal continued till the last. We started shooting in London, then he has become a part of the film. The film has the new actor Suhanel, his work is also quite good.
You are hardworking and creative as well as very honest. You don’t think that the film is like the industry, so much truth is not good in it?
See, I would not like to comment on the industry. There are every kind of people in the industry. Some people are good, some people are less good. Some people are bad. Some people immediately befriend and with some people you can never become friends. Honesty is a good thing. This shows what we want to do.
I believe that the result will be good if working honestly. You will not do injustice and doodle with your work. You will just pay attention to your work. Second, I would like to say that when my father came to Mumbai, he did not know anyone. He also had no friends. He achieved success due to his honesty. I believe in the fact that if you work honestly, then ways are made for you.
Why choose the film out of his box for directorial debut?
I chose a different story because it is fun. If everyone is doing what I am doing, then the audience will not get anything different. I also feel that people are also worried about why nothing new is being made in the industry. Why are we constantly working on the idea or remix of others. People are no longer willing to accept this. I too had to bring something new to the audience. When you watch the film, you will realize that we have not left the villagers of Hindi cinema behind. We have put songs in the right place. Emotion, fear is everywhere. All my actors have done such a good job that you will not feel deviation.
What was the thing in the story that forced you to work on it?
The specialty of this story is that you are not able to get out. You will not know till the end what is true and what lies. There is also a dialogue in the film that truth is the biggest lie in the world. We have introduced this thinking in a good way. In this film, you will only continue to gass till the end. We have made this film for cinema. People go theater and enjoy mystery.
What was the atmosphere of the set during the shoot?
The set was enjoying a lot because all are capable artists. Whenever I tell them whether we can do this scene in some other way and I would have got it. At that time, perhaps everyone’s stars were going well because the entire process was very smooth. Paresh sir has helped me a lot. He gave me the emotional support I needed as a director. Sonakshi is my sister but as an actor I respect her a lot. He has done a lot of work. She knows her work very well.
Arjun Rampal is also very supportive. Before coming on his set, some people tried to scare me that it would be difficult to work with him. But I did not see anything like that. I had found him on the set of the film ‘Paltan’. At that time, I knew him that those humans are good. People form a wrong opinion about them.
Any remembrance associated with the set, which is close to the heart and you would like to share?
I enjoyed this film very much. What we write on paper, it is a big thing to do 60 percent during the shoot. We were lucky that the work we wrote on the paper did a lot of work. I will not be able to tell a single moment. I have a lot of memories. I liked by making this film over all.
You have assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali. What did you learn from them?
He used to say a word often, nuances. I learned this thing from him. The time they set or they get the time for the set design, because he is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I am a new director, I will not get that time. If I want to shoot, I will not get 20 days time in the present time. I learned from him that these things should be kept in mind at the time of direction. Sanjay sir pays attention to many different things.
My thinking a little different, I will not pay that much attention to those things. I pay attention to artists and their emotional. I see that when he is doing the scene, is that truth in him. Nowadays, VFX, set designs, cosmetic are paying more attention to things and less on the artist. But I believe that the artist should be strong. If there is a good artist, then you will also make him stand in front of a wall and say that if you make people cry with your story, then he will show it.
What has been the reaction of your parents about this film?
It was a pleasure for me that he saw this film and he liked it. My parents will not lie to me. They speak the truth directly on the mouth. My father has an experience of 250 films. They will not lie to me. What will they get by lying to me? I am his son, if he lies and keeps me in deception, then it will lead to my loss. Seeing the film, he said that the first film has been made well.
When you were coming under direction, there was any tips from Papa?
Yes, he told me to be patient. Honoring time Whatever the time goes like good or bad, do not get swept away in it. Keep yourself strong. In the film, actors and others come and leave for a time. The whole load comes over the director. He is associated with it for a long time. In such a situation, it is very important to keep yourself connected to the film with positive approach.
You also do story writing. Where did it inspire it?
This was already inside me. When I started reading about film making, I understood that whatever the best film makers are, they have a lot of understanding and understanding of the story. When I did script writing course in Xaviers. During this film, I also learned with Neil Mohanty and Ankur Takrani. Writing is necessary for the film maker. If you do not understand the scene, then how will you explain to someone else. Writing is the only job for some people but I believe it is a Kaulberitave Kama.
When did you first think that you have to go to direction?
When I went to assist Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir. I was active in school many things but I received an award for direction. Since then I knew that I understand this thing. I can do this so Sanjay went to Sir and became an assistant director there. After that Abhinav joined Kashyap. Then I also worked for the Ed Agency. After that, when the era of Kovid came, a little work stopped. After the end of that round, the journey of ‘Nikita Roy’ started.
If you have a remake of a film by Shutrughna Sir, then which film will be it?
See, I like the story of Papa’s film ‘Mere Apne’, ‘Kala Patthar’. But it is difficult to remake. I don’t think I will find the artists of that level. Luck would also have a hand for such films that all the actors got good. Everyone did tremendous acting. It may be nice to say that yes I will make a remake but it is not possible. I will not be able to touch his films. It will be wishing that I can be able to work with Papa but cannot make a remake.
Would you like to direct your father?
I would like to do it at all. He is a wonderful person and artist. Such people meet less. Even today, they are easily connected to people. Me and Sonakshi made an ed for ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao’ with Papa. Sonakshi played the role and Papa gave her voice. She was very happy to do small work. I would definitely like to direct them but they have to find the right story for them.
What kind of films would you like to do after supernatural thriller mystery?
I would like to do an action film. I am developing a horror comedy film. I have developed a show related to the film industry. If this grew up, I would like to show my observation to people. Another super natural mystery has come to me, which I write and direct. When things are cleared, then I will tell you.
Which artists of the industry do you want to work with?
I like Ranbir Kapoor. I would like to work with Madhuri Dixit. Usually I see the script first. Then I try to understand which artist will fit here. If the script is written by looking at the artist, then Justice is not able to be with the story. I do not keep the actors in mind, I pay attention to the script.
