Jeff Bezos, the world’s fourth richest person, is marrying Lauren Sanchez in a grand ceremony in this weekend Venice. Before such big weddings, Indians like us where they are always eager to know how mehndi, music programs are going to be held, but people there cannot live without knowing whether it has ‘prenup’ and how it is!
People do not end their discussion until they know what ‘pre -precedes’ is going to happen. You must be wondering what is ‘Preinap’? This is a pre -marriage agreement, which is usually called preenp. In this, the couple makes a written agreement before marriage, which gives them the right to select and control their legal rights after marriage and tells them what will happen if the marriage is broken.
When the person with assets worth $ 231 billion (about 20 lakh crores) divorced McKenzie Scott in 2019, he did not have the ‘Preinap’ agreement with property sharing. McKenzie then got a stake in Amazon, which was worth more than $ 35 billion.
As of June 2025, Bezos had 8.6% of Amazon, with a value of $ 190.56 billion. In 2024, he sold shares worth $ 13.5 billion to his share. Bezos’s private investment firm, Bezos Expedition, keeps an account of her property-investment. The company has assets of $ 107.8 billion according to the Sovaren Wealth Fund Institute estimates.
The company has invested in AirBNB, Uber Technology, Blue Origin, Washington Post and Perplexity. Purplexity is a large rival of companies like Google. Bezos is also the 23rd largest landlord in the US, which has 4.20 lakh acres of land.
Here I am not even talking about their houses located in other places from Fifth Avenue of Manhattan. My list also does not include two jets, two helicopters and super yats. In 1997, Bezos used to drive a Honda Accord Car and worked on a desk made of additional wood reused by doors. Today he is the fourth richest person in the world!
Preinaps are not only about property, but also about who will be effective, who can use private jet, who will take care of the best breed horses, even who can say what on social media. These agreements definitely give one thing reliably, that is silence.
In developed countries, preenaps are now becoming common among people of every property class, especially whose assets are in nine digits or more. Preinaps also decide who will pack the goods in the event of a breakup and who will go out within thirty days.
It is also mentioned in some prenaps that the spouse has to keep as much weight as it was on the wedding day and will have to exercise four times a week. There is also a provision of financial penalty on fraud or affair.
An interesting thing in these ‘Preenaps’ is also Sunset Classes, which also provides for the termination of the Preinups Agreement after 10 or 20 years. This is an acceptance that long -lasting marriages turn into true partnership.
I wonder that it takes so long to become a partnership full of faith? This is the reason that Indian marriages last long, because they emphasize on life -long commitment.
Family and society have pressure on expectations and marriage is considered to be the meeting of two families. Traditionally we see marriage as a sacred and permanent bond. This deep confidence in a lifetime commitment can only become a strong obstruction against divorce.
Funda is that I would still like it to sit with lawyers and instead of making ‘prenaps’, the weddings of our families should be called ‘Made in Havan’. What do you have to say?
