Raj Thackeray’s party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has objected to calling Mumbai as ‘Bombay’ or ‘Bombay’ in ‘The Great Indian Kapil’ in Kapil Sharma’s show. The party has clearly stated that using the old name of the city is an insult to Mumbai and the people here.
MNS leader Ameya Khopkar raised the issue on social media. Khopkar also shared a clip of Kapil Sharma’s show. The video is of the episode that included Shilpa Shetty, Shamita Shetty, Huma Qureshi and her brother Saqib Salim. In the clip, Huma Qureshi, while talking about a relationship with her brother, says that she has come from outside and is not of “Bombay”.
Shilpa, Shamita, Huma and Saqib appeared on Kapil’s show on 9 August 2025.
While sharing this video, Ameya Khopkar wrote,
The Maharashtra government in 1995 and the central government in 1996 gave official recognition to the name Mumbai. The name of Mumbai was adopted before Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata. In such a situation, it should be respected. He said that this is a humble request and also a warning.

In a conversation with Live Mint, Amay Khopkar told Kapil Sharma that you have been working in Mumbai for so many years. This is your work place. People of Mumbai like you and watch your shows. Mumbai is in our heart, do not insult this city and the people here. I’m warning you.
Khopkar further said that if this happened by mistake, then improve it. Whatever comes on your show, whether it is celebrity or anchor, tell them in advance that Mumbai should not be called Bombay or Bombay. They should only be called Mumbai. If this does not happen, the MNS will agitate strongly.
